Ensuring you know how to start up your chainsaw safely is key. There are a few different techniques for starting up your unit, so pick one that best suits you and get cutting!

Safe Chainsaw Starting Techniques

Before you start up any chainsaw, it is important to have the right PPE. You should wear a helmet, eye protection, ear protection, chainsaw chaps, and steel-cap boots.

You should also complete a pre-start check. Ensure you are wearing the correct PPE, the bar nuts are tight, the chain break works, you have fuel and oil, and the chain is taught. Once you have checked all these components, you are ready to start the chainsaw.

Ground Start

Ground starting is particularly good for cold saw, where we may have to put a bit more effort into the starting process. Firstly, place the chainsaw on the ground and ensure the chain break is on, or in the forward position. Push firmly on the fore handle with one hand and place one foot on the rear handle, holding it in place.

Turn on the chainsaw, with the choke out, and grab the starter. Make sure you have a firm grip on the chainsaw and pull. When the chainsaw starts up, if you hear the saw pop, you can now decompress the choke. It’s important to know that your chainsaw is on half choke now, so as soon as the saw starts we want to quickly grab the throttle for safety. Don’t take the chain break off and pull the pull start to get your chainsaw ready for action.

Standing Start

To do a standing start, ensure the chain break is on by pushing it forward. Twist the saw to the side, holding it in the middle, and turn it on. This time, you will grip the saw between your thighs. Holding the saw firm, with a straight arm, grab the starter cord and pull sharply.

Chainsaw Starting Safety Tips

Anytime you’re not using the saw, take the trigger finger off the trigger and wrap it completely around the handle. This ensures that if you trip, your finger isn’t over the trigger and in a moment of panic you don’t grip onto it, revving it out of control.

You also want to look at turning off the chain break. The best way to do this is to point the saw directly at the ground, reach your hand around, grab the chain break and pull it back. This way, the saw can’t fall into your body and the handle keeps it at a safe distance from your body.
