As with any equipment, it is important to conduct routine checks on your chainsaw before starting a job.

Chainsaw break

First, check if your chainsaw break actually works. The best way to do this is by pressing the break forward, then picking up your combo tool and trying to move the chain forward. It should not move forward when the break is engaged. However, if you pull the chain break back, you should be able to move the chain forward with your combo tool.

Fuel

It's important to ensure you have enough fuel in your chainsaw to complete your job. Running out of fuel halfway through a cut may cause a hazard. For help filling up your chainsaw, you can watch our tutorial here

Oil

Oil is used to lubricate the chain. You should oil your saw everytime you fuel it. Filling the lubrication container will ensure the chain is lubed correctly. In our example, the manufacturer designed the chainsaw to use approximately a tank of oil to a tank of fuel.

On/off switch

The on and off switch is important for safety, so double check that it works by pressing down, which should turn the saw off.

Bar nuts

Turn the chainsaw around to check if the bar nuts are tight. Place a combination spanner on and check that they're taught. This ensures the bar doesn't vibrate and fall off. The anti-vibe between the motor and handle is important as well. We can test this by holding the handle to gently press on the saw on a slight downward angle. The saw and motor flex should be stiff and firm. We don't want it to be loose or have a broken component in it.

Air cleaner

Finally, check the air cleaner by undoing the cover, and look to see how clean it is. Professional saws have an air cleaner that can be cleaned simply by tapping out any dust. Of course, over time it will require a proper clean. When you replace the air filter, ensure all parts sit clean and firmly, and that you've got the cap tight. Replace the cover and ensure this is tightened as well. Our safety checks are now complete and we're ready to operate the chainsaw!
