Sharpening a chain is important for the safe use of your chainsaw and ease of use during jobs. You don't want to force the saw through timber, the saw should cut at its own speed, with minimum pressure and guidance. This video explains how to safely and efficiently sharpen your Prokut chainsaw chain and which tools you need for this.
Grab a stump vice and place it on your stump. Using a hammer, nail the vice into the wood to secure it. Then, take the chainsaw, put it between the vice, making sure the chain isn’t rubbing on the bottom, and tighten it in place.
Firstly, ensure your chain break is on. Then, place your file between the tooth, in the raker. The file guide sits on top of the tooth and the raker holds it in place naturally. Also, look at the markings on top of the file guide and keep them parallel to the bar. This gives you the correct angle to file at. Begin filing the chainsaw tooth in a smooth motion until it presents itself as sharp.
Move along the chain after each tooth by turning off the chain break, moving the chain up and repeating the same process. It is essential to wear gloves during this process as you are making the teeth razor sharp and don’t want to hurt yourself. It’s important to file from the inside of the tooth and sharpen to the outside to avoid blunting the file.
The depth gauge is the thin piece of metal sticking up in front of the tooth, controlling how deep the saw cuts. As you sharpen the chainsaw many times, the tooth becomes lower and lower, so we need to lower the depth gauge as well.
To lower the depth gauge, you can place a guide over the tooth, allowing the depth gauge to protrude. Using a flat file, you can push across, filing off anything that’s sticking up. Do all the right side teeth first before turning the chainsaw around and doing the left side.
